Enchantments

963 custom enchantments on top of the vanilla ones - six rarities, a maximum of three per item, and several ways to get them.

Vanilla enchanting works exactly as it always has. VortexEnchantments adds a second, much larger pool on top of it: 963 enchantments, spread across 17 kinds of gear - swords, axes, bows, crossbows, tridents, spears, hammers, every armour slot, elytra, shields, pickaxes, shovels, hoes and fishing rods.

They are not vanilla enchantments with bigger numbers. They do things vanilla cannot - pulling a mob toward you, chaining a hit to a second target, turning a fall into a slam, making a pickaxe smelt what it breaks.

The six rarities

Every enchantment belongs to one of six rarities - Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Mythic - and the rarity decides three things: how likely it is to turn up, what it costs to buy outright, and how likely it is to survive an upgrade. All three tables are below.

Three per item

An item can carry at most three Vortex enchantments. That limit is separate from vanilla enchantments - a sword with Sharpness V, Looting III and three Vortex enchantments is normal.

Three is the cap, so what you put on an item matters. It also means an item you have outgrown can be stripped and rebuilt rather than thrown away.

Where they come from

There are five live sources. All five are switched on.

The enchanting table. Enchanting normally can produce a Vortex enchantment instead of, or alongside, a vanilla one. The rarities are weighted, so the good ones stay rare:

RarityWeightRoughly
Common4040% of rolls
Uncommon2525%
Rare1818%
Epic1212%
Legendary55%

Mythic enchantments cannot come from the enchanting table at all - they only come from the enchant shop and from other players.

Librarian villagers. A librarian's custom book trades are replaced with Vortex books about 30% of the time. The price scales with rarity: a common book costs about 5 emeralds, a legendary around 60.

Loot chests. Dungeon, temple and end-city chests have a 15% chance to hold an enchanted book.

The Enchant Shop. A rotating shop that sells books outright for money:

RarityPriceDaily limit
Common$3,000unlimited
Uncommon$9,000unlimited
Rare$30,00010 per day
Epic$90,0005 per day
Legendary$300,0003 per day
Mythic$900,0001 per day

One rarity is discounted 25% at any time, and the discount rotates every hour - so if the book you want is not on sale, it will be within the hour.

Other players. Books are items, so they trade, sell on the auction house, and drop on death like anything else.

Making them stronger

Two enchantments of the same kind combine in an anvil, the same as vanilla - but past a point it can fail, and a failure destroys the book.

RaritySuccessDestroyed on failure
Common95%never
Uncommon85%never
Rare70%2%
Epic50%5%
Legendary35%10%
Mythic20%15%

The Enchant Forge raises those odds. Enchantment Dust also helps - each tier of dust adds a flat bonus to the success rate, from +5% for common dust up to +30% for mythic.

Extra slots

An item normally holds three enchantments. A Slot Increaser pushes that higher, up to eight extra slots on a single item. The first tier succeeds every time; the second works 70% of the time and the third 40%, so the last few slots are a real gamble.

Special items

Four items exist to move enchantments around. Two are craftable:

There are also scrolls - single-use items carrying one specific enchantment at one specific level, which apply straight to an item. Mystery Scrolls give a random one; Extractor Scrolls take one off.

Browsing them all

You do not need this page to find out what an enchantment does. In game:

Two systems exist but are disabled on Elderian, so do not expect them:
